Course Description: Advanced Algebra II is designed to develop skills in using variables, evaluating algebraic expressions by the use of the order of operations, solving equations and inequalities, graphing linear equations, functions and linear inequalities, writing linear equations, and using functions. Problem solving skills will be emphasized and developed.
Prerequisites: Credit for both semesters of Geometry (Advanced Geometry preferred).
Materials: Please have the following materials everyday in class: pencil, daily notes, assignment packet, paper, and a calculator. You are requiredto have a graphing calculator in Advanced Algebra II. The TI-84 is the recommended calculator. Please see Mrs. McDonald if you have questions about what calculator to purchase. FSHS has a few available to check out if necessary. A check out slip with a parent/guardian signature is required.
Grading scale: A = 90% - 100% B = 80% - 89% C = 70% - 79% D = 60% - 69% F = 59% and ↓
You MUST study for tests in Advanced Algebra II. If you do poorly on your tests, your grade will suffer.
Classroom Expectations: Listen and follow directions. Be responsible and ensure that your actions are not taking away from your learning, nor your classmates. Be prepared each and every day. This means bringing your materials to class every day. I also expect that you follow the school rules as listed in the student handbook. Respect, Responsibility, and Excellence!
Assignments: Assignments are to be turned in at the beginning of the next class period. Assignments will consist of in-class assignments as well as take home assignments. Solutions will be posted on Google classroom. Please check your work to ensure your understanding of the material. Nearly all assignments are graded on completion due to solutions being provided.
Late Work: Late daily assignments will not be accepted after the Unit Test.
Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. If a student has violated academic integrity, administration and parents/guardians will be notified and the students will be subject to consequences as outlined in the student handbook. Academic misconduct includes, but is not limited to: cheating, plagiarism, and knowingly permitting another student to plagiarize or cheat from your work.
Tests and Quizzes: There will be a test at the end of every unit and quizzes given as needed throughout the course. If you are absent, you have one week from your return to make up your test or quiz, otherwise it will count as a zero. All make-up tests and quizzes must be completed before or after school, or during ECT. I expect you to be ready for the test on the day it is given, but I do allow two test retakes if you meet the necessary requirements (see below). All tests, in-class make-ups, or retakes, must be completed in one sitting; you may not start a test one day and finish it another. Assessments will be graded on whether the solution, and method for finding it, are correct. A comprehensive final will take place at the end of each semester if required by administration. Electronic devices will not be allowed during exams. Phones will be placed in a designated place until all exams are turned in or the end of the class period is signaled by the bell. No AirPods, headphones, or smart watches will be allowed, but can be stored in a personal backpack. A jacket or pants pocket is not acceptable storage for an electronic device during an examination. Calculators may have their memory and storage cleared before and after an examination. This may erase self-installed programs. Please refer to the device’s owners manual for maintaining or reinstalling programs.
Retake/ Correction Policy:
All students are eligible to retake two tests per semester (unit tests only, quizzes are NOT eligible for retake).
An alternate form of the original test will be used.
All missing assignments must be completed in order for a student to retake a test. Credit in the gradebook is not necessarily guaranteed for these assignments.
No corrections may be made to quizzes for redeemed credit.
During the first semester only, you may correct the original test on a separate sheet of paper and it must be completed under the supervision of a math teacher. Only 50% of the missed points are eligible to be earned by accurately completing corrections, but will be counted at the homework grade weight (10%).
During the second semester, corrections to the original test must be completed under the supervision of a math teacher. No credit will be given for corrections.
The retake will be completed within a time frame established by the teacher, usually 2 weeks from the date the grade is entered into the gradebook.
The retake score will replace the original score (even if lower than the original score).
Attendance: Students are expected to be in class, ready every day. If you are absent, you are responsible to check Google classroom with completed notes, homework, updates and any other materials. Your success is your responsibility!
Device/Phone Policy: Devices are not needed during class time, unless otherwise stated. This includes both phones and computers. If devices are used during lessons, without specific permission, they will be confiscated and returned at the end of the hour. If the problem persists, the device will be sent to the office for after school pick up and a discipline referral will be documented. *I am not responsible for any damage to or loss of phone, IPad or other device should it be confiscated.
Final Thoughts: I am here to facilitate your learning. Please ask questions whenever you don’t understand something. I can’t help you if I don’t know you need it! Remember, I am here before and after school to help you have a successful school year if you start to struggle. I also know that things happen outside of our time together; it never hurts to approach your teacher with your concerns. If you are willing to put forth an effort, I am willing to listen.
